Got a question on Activia®? See below for some responses on the questions we often get asked.

  • What are the benefits of yoghurts in general and how is Activia® different?

Activia® and other yoghurts are a source of calcium, which helps to build strong bones. For example, one 125g pot of Activia® strawberry contains 21% of your RDA (recommended daily allowance) of calcium.

Activia®, like other live yoghurts, contains two bacterial cultures: Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. These have been shown to help digest lactose - which may help people with lactose intolerance.

As well as these benefits , Danone Activia® - with its exclusive culture Bifidus ActiRegularis® - can help to reduce digestive discomfort*.

Don’t forget that you will need to consume Danone Activia® regularly to achieve its benefit. We recommend at least one pot a day for at least 14 days.
  • Is Activia® a probiotic product?

Yes. Activia contains probiotics - live microorganisms which, when eaten live and in sufficient quantities, have a beneficial effect on our health – so it is classed as a probiotic product.
  • What is the difference between Activia® and Actimel® ?

Although both are probiotic products, Activia® and Actimel® contain different cultures and offer different benefits.

Actimel® contains the probiotic culture L. casei Imunitass (When consumed daily, Actimel can help support your body’s natural defences whereas Activia® contains the probiotic culture Bifidus ActiRegularis®. When eaten everyday Activia can help reduce digestive discomfort*.

*Consuming at least one pot a day helps improve slower digestive transit and digestive comfort starting from 2 weeks as part of a healthy balanced diet and lifestyle.
  • Can I eat 3 pots a week and still get the benefit?

It is recommended that at least one pot of Activia is eaten everyday for 14 days to feel the benefit. No studies have been conducted on one pot three times per week so there is no evidence to suggest there would be a benefit when consuming this amount.
  • Is there a limit on how many pots I should eat?

Studies have been conducted on eating 1 pot a day, 2 pots a day and 3 pots a day for 14 days. There are no studies at present for larger quantities. However, Activia should be consumed as part of a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle and if you have any concerns you should discuss them with your GP or dietician.
  • Is Danone Activia® suitable for vegetarians?

It depends on the product. All Activia® products that are not suitable for vegetarians are clearly marked as such on the information panel.
  • Can my children benefit from Activia®?

Activia® is suitable for the whole family but it is not specially formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of infants or young children so it is not recommended for those under 3 years old. If you have any concerns about the suitability of Activia for your child please discuss it with your GP or dietician.
  • What happens if I cook with Activia®, using natural yogurt as an alternative to cream?

Studies have not been conducted on Activia® which has been heated or used in recipes and cooking. However, heating the product is likely to destroy the live bacteria so you may not feel the same benefit. Using Activia® as an alternative to cream may be a great way of helping to lower the fat content of creamy dishes.
  • Is the culture affected by leaving the pot open?

The probiotic cultures found in Activia are anaerobic which means they do not survive well with oxygen. So, once the pack is opened, there is loss of bacteria. It is best to consume all of a single pot once it is opened and make sure that large pots are well sealed once opened.
  • Is Activia® suitable for diabetics?

Diabetes is a complex disease so, depending on your needs, it could be suitable providing the sugar content is factored into your overall diet. We suggest discussing it further with your health practitioner or dietician.
  • Is Danone Activia® suitable for people with coeliac disease?

Although Activia does not contain wheat as an ingredient, there is a risk of cross-contamination caused by the production of other products containing wheat in the same factory. This is why you’ll see that below the ingredient list it says "Produced on a line handling...wheat".

Coeliac disease is an auto-immune response which is triggered by the consumption of gluten. Gluten is found in wheat, rye and barley (oats may also cause a reaction in some individuals). These ingredients, when added to a product, are required to be listed on the ingredient list, but there is no requirement for the manufacturer to label their product as suitable or unsuitable for coeliacs. It is recommended that, if you have coeliac disease, you read ingredient lists carefully before consuming.

If you have any concerns about what foods you can and cannot eat please consult your GP.
  • Can I eat Danone Activia® while I am pregnant or breast feeding?

Activia should form part of a balanced and varied diet and lifestyle. If you are pregnant or lactating please discuss any concerns you may have with your GP, dietician or midwife.

*Based on studies with 2 pots consumed daily. Enjoy as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle
