Take five

Juliette's nutrition tip : Take five

Health experts recommend we eat five servings of fruit and veg each day and for very good reason. Most of these foods are lower in calories and fat and so can help us to control our weight. They are also a source of different vitamins and minerals that we need to stay healthy. Plus they contain fibre, which is important for a healthy digestive system. But best of all, they add variety to our diet and taste great. So start experimenting by adding a rainbow of different fruit and veg to your trolley – try sweet potato, butternut squash, portabello mushrooms, okra, passion fruit, mango, starfruit and melon.

Remember, one portion is equivalent to a whole piece of fruit such as an apple, orange or pear, two small fruits such as satsumas or plums, a bowl of fruit salad, a tablespoon of dried fruit or a small glass (150ml) of unsweetened orange juice.

When it comes to vegetables, a portion is equivalent to 3 heaped tablespoons of cooked veg or beans or 4 heaped tablespoons of green veg.

I do try to "take five" but find the fruit difficult as some fruits seem to upset my stomach, I eat grapes and kiwis and tinned fruit such as peaches and pineapple.

Yes, I find just adding some extra vegetables here or there to meals does the trick, and perhaps some fruit for dessert...

Tara I'm sorry you find this hard! It really doesn't have to be that way... there are simple things you can do to make it more achievable. Carry an apple in your handbag so you don't opt for other snacks... eat a carrot instead of some nuts or crisps...and always have fruit and veg with each meal! Sometimes I find that it's hard to limit myself to just 5! Keep going!! *Susannah
