Take time out to eat

Lots of us lead busy, stressful lives these days and the temptation to save time by eating on the run can be hard to resist. However, if you do this regularly it can play havoc with your digestion. This is because when you eat in a rush, you're more likely to eat quickly and gulp down air with your food. That's why it's great to take time to sit down and eat lunch whenever possible.

Some handy tips to help your

  • Try not to rush your food - eat nice and slowly, chewing each mouthful well.
  • Avoid overeating. If you're experiencing problems with your digestion, reduce the size of your portions at mealtimes, or try eating four to five small meals a day instead of three large ones.
  • Eat regularly and try not to skip meals.
  • Avoid eating a big meal just before you go to bed - it's best to eat your last meal at least two to three hours before lying down.
  • Make sure you have plenty to drink. Try to have at least one and a half litres (two and a half pints) of liquid a day.
