Walking does wonders

Nicki's fitness tip: Walking does wonders

Make more of the journey.

If you put a little oomph into it, walking is a great exercise, burning about 180 calories in 30 minutes. Adding hills, sprints or even a few minutes of jogging can increase the amount of calories you burn. Make sure you walk briskly, pretend you're trying to catch a bus, and keep your head up, back straight and swing your arms.

Tips: Give yourself a destination, walk to work, go to pick the kids up on foot. And try setting off late, it will make you walk quicker and burn way more calories.

Walking is food for the soul especially in the autumn months when the air is so fresh. Following on from Louise's comment below, you can now download pedometers free if you have iphones/smartphones.

I'm a great believer in walking and aim for 10,000 steps a day, which is around 5kms. I have a desk job and find that walking every hour or so clears my mind and helps me concentrate. A pedometer is a great way to measure how many steps you walk. *Louise
