What are the benefits of yogurts in general and how is Activia® different?
-
Activia® and other yogurts are a source of calcium, for example one 125g pot of Activia® strawberry contains 21% of your RDA (recommended daily allowance) of calcium. Calcium helps to build strong bones.
Activia®, like other live yogurts, contains two bacterial cultures: Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus. These have been shown to help digest lactose which may help some lactose-intolerant people.
In addition to these benefits common to all live yogurts, Danone Activia® with its unique culture Bifidus ActiRegularis® offers a benefit to your health of helping to improve slower digestive transit when 1 to 2 pots are eaten every day for 14 days as part of a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle.
Remember that regular consumption of Danone Activia® is required to achieve its benefit. We recommend at least one pot a day for at least 14 days.
-
Is Activia® a probiotic product?
-
Probiotics are live microorganisms which, when they are eaten live and in sufficient quantities, have a beneficial effect on our health. As Activia® meets these criteria it is classified as a probiotic product.

Can I eat 3 pots a week and still get the benefit?
-
Some of the independent clinical studies carried out on Activia® in an older population have demonstrated
-
An improvement in intestinal transit time after eating one pot a day for 14 days.
-
An increased effect with 2 or 3 pots a day for 14 days
-
Is there a limit on how many pots I should eat?
-
Studies have been conducted on eating 1 pot a day, 2 pots a day and 3 pots a day for 14 days. There are no studies at present for larger quantities. However, Activia should be consumed as part of a healthy, balanced diet and lifestyle and if you have any concerns you should discuss them with your GP or dietitian.
-
Is Danone Activia® suitable for vegetarians?
-
All Activia® products that are not suitable for vegetarians are clearly marked as such on the information panel.
-
Can my children benefit from Activia®?
-
Activia® is suitable for the whole family but it is not specially formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of infants or young children so it is not recommended for under 3 year olds. If you have any concerns about the suitability of the product for your child you should discuss them with your GP or dietitian.
-
What happens if I cook with Activia®, using natural yogurt as an alternative to cream?
-
Studies have not been conducted on Activia® which has been heated or used in recipes and cooking, however heating the product is likely to destroy the live bacteria so you may not feel the same benefit. Using Activia® as an alternative to cream may be a great way of helping to lower the fat content of creamy dishes.
-
Is the culture affected by leaving the pot open?
-
The cultures are anaerobic (which means they do not survive well with oxygen) and therefore once the pack is opened, there is loss of bacteria. It is best to eat single pots at a time and if using a large pot, ensure you keep the lid on tightly.
-
Is Activia® suitable for diabetics?
-
Diabetes is a complex disease - depending on the individuals needs the product could be suitable providing the sugar content is factored into the overall diet. We suggest the consumer discuss it further with their health practitioner or dietician.
-
Is Danone Activia® suitable for people with coeliac disease?
-
Coeliacs disease is an auto-immune response which is triggered by the consumption of gluten. Gluten is found in wheat, rye and barley (oats may also cause a reaction in some individuals). These ingredients, when added to a product, are required to be listed on the ingredient list, but there is no requirement for the manufacturer to label their product as suitable or unsuitable for coeliacs. It is recommended that individuals with coeliacs disease read the ingredient lists of the foods they choose to consume to check that the foods do not contain any wheat, rye or barley.
Activia states below the ingredient list that it is "Produced on a line handling...wheat." Therefore, although it does not contain wheat as an ingredient, there is a risk of cross-contamination of wheat in Activia which is caused by the production of other products containing wheat in the same factory.
If you have any concerns about what foods they can and cannot eat they should consult their GP.
-
Can I eat Danone Activia® while I am pregnant or breast feeding?
-
Activia should form part of a balanced and varied diet and lifestyle. Pregnant or lactating women should discuss any concerns they may have with their GP, dietitian or midwife.
